Chief Alamieyeseigha reportedly died of cardiac arrest at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital on Saturday, October 10 at the age of 63, after slipping into coma and was placed on life support.
The President of IYC, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, who made the position of the umbrella body of Ijaw youths known, said the government’s planned extradition of Alamieyeseigha to the United Kingdom for a renewed trial after 10 years that he was tried, jailed and pardoned, worsened his ailment, which allegedly led to his eventual death.
Eradiri, who stressed that Alamieyeseigha was not jailed because of corruption, claimed that the deceased, fondly called the ‘Governor-General of the Ijaw nation’, while he was alive, was imprisoned for his stand on resource control and fiscal federalism.
The IYC leader also condemned activities of oil bunkering in the region, saying it was a criminal act which is hazardous to the economy, injurious to the people and the ecosystem.
