Governor
Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has warned Nigerian politicians against
playing politics with the death of Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu
Awolowo.
The governor, who gave the warning when he visited the Awolowos
Ikenne-Remo residence in Ogun State on Friday, said the deceased should
not be celebrated for political capital.
Accompanied on the condolence visit by Senator Ben Murray-Bruce
(PDP/Bayelsa East Senatorial District), Fayose advised politicians to
instead sustain the legacies of the late HID’s and that of her late
husband and former Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi
Awolowo.
Since the matriarch of Awolowo family died last Saturday at the age of
99, the Awolowo’s Ikenne home has become a beehive of activities with
politicians, groups, individuals, friends, family and others falling
over themselves to pay their condolence to the family.
Prominent Nigerians that have visited the Awolowos in the past week are
former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Head of Interim National
Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is a
grand-son-in-law to the late HID Awolowo; a presidential delegation led
by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David
Lawal; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Lt.-Gen. T.Y Danjuma (retd.) and his wife,
Senator Daisy Danjuma; prominent industrialist, Dr Oba Otudeko; the
Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, who was represented by the
Osi Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun; among others too numerous to
mention.
But Fayose stressed that visiting the Awolowos should not just be a
one-off thing aimed at scoring cheap political points and making
publicity stunts.
“One thing I like to remind all politicians; it is in our way to make
politics out of people’s lives, to celebrate them for political
reasons”, he said.
